Facebook sues Yahoo for patent infringement- The patent war continues to rage between Facebook and Yahoo. A mere three weeks after Yahoo filed  its lawsuit against Facebook for patent infringement, Facebook has counterattacked with its own claims that Yahoo is infringing on several of its own software patents. According to Facebook’s counterclaim , Yahoo in infringing on 10 of Facebook’s patents, including patents for search, photo tagging, and advertising technologies. “From the outset, we said we would defend ourselves vigorously against Yahoo’s lawsuit, and today we filed our answer as well as counterclaims against Yahoo for infringing ten of Facebook’s patents,” stated  Ted Ullyot, general counsel of Facebook. “While we are asserting patent claims of our own, we do so in response to Yahoo’s short-sighted decision to attack one of its partners and prioritize litigation over innovation.”

EU to investigate Motorola Mobility’s patent suits- The European Commission  will conduct  two investigations into Motorola Mobility’s patent lawsuits. Apple and Microsoft filed the suits against Motorola on claims that the company failed to license essential technologies on fair terms.
Google CEO sits down with BusinessWeek- Brad Stone from BusinessWeek conducted  an interview with Google co-founder and current CEO Larry Page this week. The two discuss patents, Motorola, Google+, and, of course, search.
Digital Public Library of America to open by April 2013- Robert Darnton of the non-profit Digital Public Library of America  recently announced  that the digital book project would launch in April 2013.
Google introduces Conversion Tracking for Ad Extensions- Google introduced a new suite of tracking features for their Ad Extension Products, e.g., Sitelinks, Location, Call, Social, and Product. For more on the service, check out Cassandra Caswell-Stirling’s  article on The Search Agents.
Google unveils Project Glass- This week Google released  more information about its augmented reality glasses, Project Glass, sparking a rash of reactions from advertising and tech pundits. Accompanying its Google+ announcement , Google also released a YouTube video, which demonstrates how the glasses could display relevant information and pop-up graphics on a tiny screen a couple of inches away from the wearer’s right eye. The video, which follows around a hip Googler in New York City, depicts a future where GPS location services, social networking, weather, traffic, maps, photos, and your wireless connection hover in front of you eye, informing and improving your navigation in the real world.
Now before you get too exciting about the prospect of an augmented future, it should be noted that Google announced the project to get people’s feedback about the idea. The glasses aren’t actually in production. In fact many are already skeptical of the concept-based project, criticizing Google for publishing a product that is currently technologically impossible.“In one simple fake video, Google has created a level of over-hype and over-expectation that their hardware cannot possibly live up to.” Blair MacIntyre , director of the Augmented Environments Lab at Georgia Tech, explained to Wired Magazine .
“Some of what I find a little annoying about the video is that they staged all these things such that as when these notifications come to the middle of the screen, the person is looking at the thing it’s referring to,” MacIntyre said. “Is it augmented realty, or is it location-based notifications? It’s going to generate ideas in people and expectations that just might not match.”
