The Week We Searched For- February 13-17, 2012

Google gets nod on Motorola acquisition from U.S. and EU- Regulators in the U.S. and European Union approved [1] Google’s proposed acquisition of Motorola for $12.5 billion on Tuesday.  Both U.S. and EU officials promise to keep a close eye on how Google licenses Motorola’s important telecommunications patents [2].  EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia explained to reporters, “This merger decision should not and will not mean that we are not concerned by the possibility that, once Google is the owner of this portfolio, Google can abuse these patents, linking some patents with its Android devices. This is our worry.”

For more on Google’s acquisition of Motorola, check out the following articles:

    • Does Google’s Purchase of Motorola Make It A Conglomerate? [3] – Robert Cyran from Slate.com asks if Google’s push into hardware manufacturing could affect Wall Street’s perception of the company and whether investors will pressure the search giant to diversify.
    • Google’s Bid to Be Everything to Everyone [4]- Peter Burrows from Business Week discusses how Google’s push into hardware could further secure its dominance in online ad sales, and possibly alarm investors and mobile partners such as Samsung and HTC.

62% of Valentine’s Day restaurant search were mobile- Google released [5] interesting data on mobile search and Valentine’s Day.  According to Google’s research [5], “A whopping 62 percent of total searches for popular national chain restaurants [in the US] on Valentine’s Day occurred on high end mobile devices or tablets.”

Google introduces Enhanced Ad Sitelinks- Google improved its ad sitelinks offering this week.  The new system works by incorporating text from ads in your account that are related to your sitelinks. [6] It’s a little difficult to understand without an example. Here’s the example David Ganzhorn and Ramakrishnan Kandhan gave in their blog post on Inside AdWords [6]:

Say you’ve created sitelinks for your pizza restaurant campaign, and your ad displays sitelinks as shown here:

Now, let’s say your account also includes the following text ads:

With this enhancement, your ad could now look like this:

**The service is available to marketers who siteslinks appear above Google’s search results and who have active ads that are closely related to their sitelinks.

1 billion smartphones by 2016? – According to new research [10] from Forrester, 1 billion people will own smartphones by 2016, making it increasingly important for marketers to leverage mobile products to engage their customers, according to the company.  The report also states that by 2016 mobile consumers will spend $56 billion via apps and that by 2015 the total spend on mobile devices, software and services by consumers and businesses will amount to $1.3 trillion.  “Mobile is the new face of engagement,” explains [10] Ted Schadler, a principal analyst at Forrester and an author of the study.  “Businesses should stop thinking about it as a small Web site on a tiny computer, and start thinking about mobile as being deeply embedded systems of engagement. That turns out to have huge implications.”
