Even Google makes SEO title tag mistakes

We’re constantly talking to our clients about the importance of good title tags for Google’s indexing, communicating topic authority, and click through rates. So it’s good to know that even Google demonstrates the occasional faux pas when indexing (the page actually has a title tag in the code).


Good for an SEO geek chuckle (it’s already done the rounds of the office with a few laughs) and The Search Agency “best practices” deck.

Just for the quick reminder here’s the “science” part of the art of SEO title tags:

  • Title tags need to be unique (no two should be exactly alike)
  • Title tags should be keyword focused (based on keyword research, site goals, site business, page focus / content)
  • Title tags should be around 6 to 12 words (66 characters) long (review the SERP)
  • Title tags should not have the Company/Website name in front. If you must use it in the title tag, place it towards the end of the tag.

    Hey Grant – it looks like the page has a title tag (per our header checker); although it does 302 redirect (with a Moved…Temporarily) to:

    Which has a title tag of: Google AdWords: Keyword Tool

    Bing has no problem picking this up.
