Did Apple, unwittingly, just create a mobile search engine? With the sages in Cupertino nothing seems accidental, but one still has to wonder: Could Siri, the iPhone voice assistant, accomplish what Google and the other search behemoths have so far been unable to? Does Siri presage a more-natural mobile-search experience?
Before Siri, mobile search seemed clumsy and not meaningfully different from its desktop counterpart. But a mobile searcher is different. Contextual details intuited by an iPhone user’s location, behavior, and relationships all inform Siri’s uncanny ability to parse meaning from voice commands and return relevant information.
For Apple, where Siri finds information on the Internet matters less right now than the process by which it retrieves the information. However, it’s easy to picture this not always being the case. In their hunt for the perfect search technology—one that returns the best results and the best ads—Google and its peers must learn as much as they can about our individual preferences and behavior. With Apple powering its mobile hardware, software, and database of information, is it on the brink of creating the perfect mobile search engine?
