Google gets more social- Google announced [1] on Thursday its new social search services, which will incorporate social media activities into search results. The new social search suite mergers your contacts’ relevant social media activities on Twitter, Google Buzz, LinkedIn and more into the SERP. The service will be rolled out over the next week on English speaking searches. Users must be logged into their Google account and have linked their social connections to Google in order to see social search results.

ComScore releases January 2011 search data- ComScore released [2] their January 2011 core search share report on Monday. This month’s report was another win for Bing, whose share improved by 1.1 point to 13.1 percent. Google dropped 1 percent from 66.6 percent to 65.6 percent. Yahoo’s share remained stable from December 2010 to January 2011 at 16.1 percent.

ReachLocal Acquires DealOn- ReachLocal [3] acquired [4] the daily deal site DealOn [5] this week for $10 million. ReachLocal helps local businesses manage and monitor their paid, display, social and mobile advertisements. ReachLocal’s sales force will use DealOn to sell daily deals online for their advertisers.

Facebook adds civil unions to profile options- On Thursday, Facebook added civil unions and domestic partnerships to their relationship status options. In a statement to Huffington Post [6], Andrew Noyes, Facebook’s manager public policy communications, explains, “This has been a highly requested feature from users. We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook.”

Bing introduces new toolbar- Microsoft announced its new Bing Bar [7], designed to better incorporate the sophistication of Bing’s search engine into the user experience. The toolbar acts like an online chaperon, automating your email, Facebook and more, while assisting on searches within websites. The toolbar also provides automated news, weather, traffic updates and even a Groupon like deal section. Have you tried out Bing’s new Bing Bar?   • President Obama headed out to Silicon Valley this week to speak with technology leaders about education and job creation. Rumored guests included Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt and more. Check out VentureBeat [8] for more details on the power dinner.
  • Edinburgh Napier University released [9] new information on the relationship between Facebook and social anxiety. Their study, which questioned around 200 students, found that an overwhelming majority of users experience anxiety and pressure regarding contacts, etiquette and social engagements. Dr. Kathy Charles, who led the study, added, “Like gambling, Facebook keeps users in a neurotic limbo, not knowing whether they should hang on in there just in case they miss out on something good.”
  • Eric Schmidt spoke at the Mobile Word Congress on Tuesday in Barcelona. In his speech, Schmidt emphasized the potential of predictive, “autonomous search” to help users efficiently and immediately navigate through the Internet and the world.
