Why I’m sticking with Google over Bing (Or “The Lazy Man’s Guide to Enlightenment”)

It's quite simple why I'm sticking with Google. I'm not going to make the excuse of "it's better," "more relevant," or any other argument that may (or may not) be true. There's one reason, and one reason only why Google will be my search engine of choice. I'm lazy. That's it! No earth-shattering technobabble justification on semantic relevance, universal search, integrated media or UI dominance. Luckily, I'm part of the majority. (So I don't feel too bad and a need to rush down to the gym) For those that have browser or smart phone preferences with Google set as default, I doubt they'll ever change. Why should they make the effort, or know how to? Case in point, I had to show a guy at the airport on Tuesday how to change Yahoo to Google search default on his iPhone. Therein lies the future success of Google as the predominant search engine. It's become a default, a part of the English lexicon, and an accepted method of search for the unwashed masses. It's mainstream. So before I switch, I'm going to have to care. And that, my friends is the true Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment.

  1. Hi Grant, I agree with you that most people are lazy and apt to leave the ‘discovery’of new things to others. However, I was an early adopter of Google back in the days when Yahoo was the one and only search engine. So I have been on the lookout for the next big thing ever since, having got it so profoundly right first time around with Google, lol. My motto is Always be Prepared to Take a Chance!

    I’m totally up for trying new things and always looking for the ‘next best’ of *anything*, but that’s because I’m a kinda geeky guy.

    There still remains a whole nation of keyboard potatoes who will never switch to Bing because “if it ain’t broke, don’t touch my browser!”

    I am not impressed with Bing at all. There is potential though. The video search is a good idea, but the dates on the videos should indicate the production date, not the index date. I could go on and on. Still not as bad as that other one last year… what was it called? ;)

    i agree with you grant. there needs to be a significant game changer to steal marketshare from google. in the meantime, it’s getting to be like kleenex and coke.
